DURHAM, N.C. — In a dominating performance, the No. 11 Duke Blue Devils triumphed over the Seattle Redhawks with a score of 70-48, bolstered by Tyrese Proctor’s 13 points and a formidable defensive effort that limited Seattle to a mere 21.3% shooting on Friday night.
Freshman standout Cooper Flagg contributed significantly, recording nine points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Duke (5-2) established control early on, heading into halftime with a 12-point advantage before launching into a strong second-half start, keeping Seattle scoreless for the first eight minutes.
Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe led the Redhawks (2-5) with nine points and 12 rebounds but faced a challenging night as the team made only 10 of their 47 attempts from the field.
In terms of historical context, this matchup marked the first-ever meeting between the Redhawks and Duke, with Seattle looking for their first victory against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent since they defeated Virginia in December 2010.
Duke faced Seattle after a tough loss to No. 1 Kansas earlier in the week at the Vegas Showdown and managed to overcome a sluggish start to offensively dominate the game; the Blue Devils gradually turned a slow opening into a comfortable victory.
A crucial moment in the game came right after halftime when Duke surged with a 13-0 run, featuring transition baskets from Caleb Foster and a quick-fire 3-pointer from Proctor, assisted by Flagg. Freshman Isaiah Evans capped off this scoring burst with a driving dunk that pushed the score to 50-25 at the 12:33 mark.
Highlighting the game statistics, Seattle struggled significantly during a stretch where they missed 23 of 25 shot attempts, spanning from midway through the first half to the second half. They didn’t register a score in the second half until Brayden Maldonado’s free throws at the 11:58 mark, following a streak of 13 consecutive missed shots. Viktor Rajkovic eventually broke their scoring drought with a 3-pointer at 9:18 left on the clock, but by that point, Duke was ahead by 29.
Looking ahead, Seattle is set to face Portland State at home on Wednesday, while Duke will also be in action that night, taking on No. 4 Auburn in the ACC/SEC Challenge. Auburn is expected to be in contention for the No. 1 spot in the upcoming AP Top 25 poll after their recent success at the Maui Invitational.
