San Jose, California — The San Jose State Spartans triumphed over Stanford with a thrilling 34-31 victory, powered by quarterback Walker Eget’s impressive performance, where he achieved a career-best of four touchdown passes. Eget’s final touchdown, an 18-yard throw to TreyShun Murray, came with just 1:55 remaining in the game, solidifying the win for the Spartans.

Eget finished the game completing 33 of 49 attempts for a total of 385 yards, though he was intercepted once. Nick Nash, leading the country in receptions and touchdown catches going into the game, caught nine passes for 91 yards and scored two touchdowns, thereby breaking San Jose State’s single-season record for receptions.

Now standing at 7-5, the Spartans eagerly anticipate news regarding a possible bowl invitation. They have secured postseason appearances in each of the last two seasons and in three out of the last four overall.

For Stanford, quarterback Ashton Daniels managed to throw for 252 yards and had one touchdown to his name, but unfortunately, he was intercepted three times during the match. The Cardinal, holding a record of 3-9, found themselves trailing for most of the game due to a myriad of self-inflicted errors, including 10 penalties that amounted to 115 yards lost.

Daniels helped the Stanford team briefly take the lead by scoring on a 1-yard rushing touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, bringing the score to 31-27 with just under eight minutes left in the game. The Spartans gave it their all but fell short on their next drive, losing possession at the Cardinal 11-yard line after Eget overthrew a pass to Nash in the end zone.

Even with the pressure mounting near their own end zone, Stanford attempted to push forward but encountered a setback when Isiah Revis intercepted Daniels, providing the Spartans with a fresh opportunity for a game-winning drive in the first encounter between these two teams since 2013.

Nash showcased his abilities with touchdown catches that spanned 20 and 2 yards. Both sides had significant touchdowns nullified by penalties during the match, showcasing the tension of this long-awaited rivalry.

In the game’s aftermath, the Cardinal appeared to lack the motivation typically seen in a team vying for postseason play. The indecision seemed to affect the coaching staff as well, leading to several questionable play calls when they drove deep into the Spartans’ territory in the first half. Nonetheless, Stanford’s resilience in the final minutes was commendable, although they ultimately could not clinch the win.

Looking ahead, Stanford will not take the field again until the start of the next season in August, when they face Hawaii. Meanwhile, San Jose State stands ready and bowl eligible, awaiting their invitation to compete in postseason games.
