MEXICO CITY — Silvia Pinal, a prominent figure from Mexico’s cinematic Golden Age in the 1940s and 50s, has passed away at the age of 93.
Throughout her impressive six-decade career, Pinal starred in films alongside renowned Mexican comedians such as Cantinflas and Tin Tan, as well as romantic leads like Pedro Infante. She gained international recognition for her role in Luis Buñuel’s acclaimed 1961 film “Viridiana.” Her relationship with Buñuel continued as she featured in two more of his films, “The Exterminating Angel” in 1962 and “Simon of the Desert” in 1965.
Pinal was among the rare actresses from the Golden Age who successfully transitioned to television when the standard of Mexican cinema began to decline during the 1960s. Additionally, she ventured into production and even served as a member of Congress during her career.
Recently, her family disclosed that she had been hospitalized due to a urinary tract infection. The news of her passing was officially confirmed by Claudia Curiel de Icaza, Mexico’s Culture Secretary.
“Her legacy as an artist and her contributions to our culture are unforgettable. Rest in peace,” Curiel de Icaza conveyed through her social media platforms.
She is survived by her former spouse Enrique Guzmán, as well as her daughters, actress Sylvia Pasquel and rock singer Alejandra Guzmán.
Details regarding her funeral arrangements have not been disclosed yet.
