DURBAN, South Africa — In a shocking display, Sri Lanka was dismissed for a mere 42 runs by South Africa at Kingsmead on Thursday, marking the team’s lowest-ever score in Test cricket history.
Previously, their all-time low was 71 runs, which was recorded against Pakistan over 20 years ago in Kandy.
South Africa’s bowlers achieved this remarkable feat in just 83 legal deliveries, completing the innings in 13.5 overs. This signifies the shortest total in terms of deliveries in a century, with the last record being set in 1924 when England bowled out South Africa in 75 balls.
The 42 runs not only set a new low for Sri Lanka but also became the lowest score recorded in Test history at Kingsmead. It surpassed the previous record of 45 runs made by New Zealand in 2013 while facing South Africa in Cape Town.
On the second day of the first Test, the pitch appeared to favor batting, as South Africa managed to score 111 runs within a lengthy morning session, having resumed on 80 for 4 before ultimately being bowled out for 191.
Kamindu Mendis was the standout scorer for Sri Lanka, contributing 13 runs, while the team saw four players dismissed for ducks.
Medium-pacer Marco Jansen excelled with extraordinary bowling figures of 7 wickets for just 13 runs in 6.5 overs, a career-best for him.
Remarkably, Jansen became only the second bowler in Test history to claim seven wickets in fewer than seven overs, a feat last achieved by Australia’s Hugh Trumble in 1904 against England.
