NAIROBI, Kenya — Tragic events unfolded in eastern Uganda as landslides claimed the lives of at least 13 individuals, burying approximately 40 homes across six villages, according to relief officials on Thursday.

The Uganda Red Cross Society confirmed the recovery of 13 bodies and indicated that rescue operations are ongoing, as hopes remain for finding more survivors amidst the wreckage.

Local news reports suggest that officials are braced for the possibility of the death toll climbing to as high as 30, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The landslides struck after intense rainfall hit the area on Wednesday night, particularly affecting the mountainous region of Bulambuli, which is known to experience such natural disasters frequently.

In response to the calamity, the office of the Prime Minister issued a disaster alert on Wednesday, warning that the heavy rains have disrupted major roadways throughout the country, potentially complicating rescue efforts and aid accessibility.
