DETROIT — A police officer from Detroit has been assigned to administrative duty amid an ongoing investigation into a shooting that resulted in injuries to two bystanders, in addition to a man who had aimed a firearm at the officer during an unlawful street gathering earlier this year.

According to the preliminary findings of the investigation, the officer discharged five rounds after responding to reports of gunfire in the west side of the city, as detailed by Interim Police Chief Todd Bettison in a press conference on Wednesday.

Bettison stated that investigators recovered 93 shell casings and eight firearms from the scene of the incident. He disclosed that a recent ballistics analysis confirmed that rounds fired from the officer’s weapon struck two individuals in the vicinity. Bettison noted that all officer-involved shootings in Detroit prompt the submission of a warrant to prosecutors for further review.

The inquiry into the events surrounding the shooting, which took place on June 1, remains active. Bettison noted that calls to 911 described the chaotic scene as a potential mass shooting, with reports of loud gunfire and numerous people in a state of panic.

According to Bettison, two individuals were observed by police at the scene; one was holding an assault-style rifle while the other brandished a handgun. He emphasized the difficulty officers faced when confronting an armed suspect among a crowd of innocent attendees.

The officer in question had issued loud commands for the armed individual to relinquish his weapon before firing five rounds. The incident resulted in injuries to two women, aged 20 and 23, as well as the man the officer was targeting, who managed to flee the scene but required hospitalization. Fortunately, none of the injuries sustained were deemed life-threatening. Bettison also mentioned that additional suspects related to the incident are still being pursued.

The officer involved is a veteran of the police department, having served for eight years.
