Law enforcement rebuffs accusations of withholding evidence following new Netflix documentary on JonBenet Ramsey’s murder

DENVER — Interest surrounding the tragic murder of JonBenet Ramsey has surged once again, particularly following the release of a new documentary series on Netflix. In response to this renewed focus, Boulder, Colorado law enforcement officials clarified that they are actively pursuing the investigation into the 1996 death of the six-year-old girl and that there are no unexplored leads or evidence currently available.

JonBenet, who participated in beauty pageants, was discovered lifeless in her family’s basement just a day after Christmas of 1996. Her mother had reported her missing, stating a ransom note had been left, prompting a thorough search. The case quickly gained national attention due to its disturbing details and gripping footage of JonBenet in pageants, establishing it as one of America’s most notorious unsolved mysteries.

The police addressed these inquiries in their annual investigation update, coinciding with the upcoming 28th anniversary of JonBenet’s murder. Boulder police decided to release the report earlier than usual due to heightened interest, especially linking it to the Netflix series titled “Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey.”

In a statement, Chief of Boulder Police, Steve Redfearn, expressed that the department appreciates media coverage as it might present new opportunities to generate leads. He emphasized their determination to comprehensively address and solve the case but noted the importance of being discreet with investigative details to safeguard potential future prosecutions.

Redfearn mentioned that throughout the years, multiple suspects have been thoroughly investigated, and detectives remain receptive to any tips that come in regarding the case.

The Netflix documentary examines missteps in the investigation and the overwhelming media attention that surrounded the incident.

JonBenet’s death was ruled a homicide, characterized by blunt force trauma and strangulation, yet no one has ever faced prosecution. Early on, police faced severe criticism for their handling of the investigation, mainly amidst speculation implicating her family. Nevertheless, a prosecutor cleared her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, along with her brother Burke, in 2008 based on new DNA analysis from clothing that suggested the engagement of an unidentified third-party in the crime.

This declaration came shortly after the passing of Patsy Ramsey, who succumbed to cancer. The former district attorney, Mary Lacy, recognized the Ramseys as victims of the tragedy.

John Ramsey has remained vocal in his quest for justice and, in 2022, backed a petition urging the Colorado governor to take direct action in the investigation by assigning an external agency to handle DNA testing. He reiterated his belief that certain items require PCR testing and should also be analyzed through genealogical databases.

In recent years, there has been success in identifying suspects from cold cases by extracting DNA profiles from crime scenes and comparing them to DNA results shared on genealogy websites.

In the annual update of 2021, police reiterated that DNA analysis had not been dismissed as a possible avenue for resolving the case. They acknowledged in 2022 that certain evidence might be compromised if subjected to DNA testing.

Authorities revealed last year that they had assembled a group of external experts to reassess the investigation, seeking fresh insights and assessing whether advancements in technology or forensic testing might illuminate new clues. In the latest communications, Chief Redfearn confirmed this review has concluded, yet the police are diligently working their way through a considerable list of recommendations from the expert panel.
