DECATUR, Ga. — Authorities announced on Wednesday afternoon that two police officers who were shot in a neighborhood near Atlanta are both expected to make a full recovery from their injuries.
These officers were responding to a 911 emergency call in a residential area in DeKalb County, located just east of Atlanta, shortly after 11 a.m., according to DeKalb County Police Chief Mirtha Ramos.
One of the officers sustained a gunshot wound to the upper leg, while the other officer was shot in the foot. Chief Executive Officer of DeKalb County, Michael Thurmond, stated during a briefing that early assessments indicate a complete recovery for both officers.
Ramos noted that both officers are currently under observation at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
In a remarkable display of bravery, one of the injured officers continued to pursue a suspect even after being shot, ultimately managing to take him into custody as additional officers arrived to assist with the arrest. The suspect, a 20-year-old male, was being questioned by investigators on Wednesday afternoon, though no information regarding possible charges has yet been released.
In reflection on the situation, Ramos expressed gratitude, saying, “Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful and blessed. We are thankful and blessed today that our officers will be able to spend Thanksgiving with their families.”
