HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A linebacker from Alabama A&M University, which is the state’s largest historically Black institution, tragically passed away on Tuesday following a collision that occurred during a game in October. This incident had resulted in him being hospitalized for a month, as detailed in a university statement.
Medrick Burnett Jr., 20 years old, was navigating his inaugural season as a linebacker for the university when he suffered a head injury during the annual Magic City Classic, where they faced off against in-state adversary Alabama State University on October 26. Although he was taken to the hospital after the incident, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries late Tuesday evening. The university has not released any details regarding the specific cause of death.
In a heartfelt tribute, Dr. Paul Bryant, the Director of Athletics at Alabama A&M, remarked, “Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; he was a remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership, and compassion left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.” His contributions to the team and the university community were highly regarded.
Upon being admitted to the hospital, Burnett’s situation took a turn for the worse, as he dealt with “several brain bleeds and swelling of the brain,” according to a verified fundraising campaign created by his sister, Dominece James.
Originating from Lakewood, California, Burnett made the transition to Alabama A&M in 2024 after participating in one season with the Grambling State University football team. During his time on the team in 2024, he participated in seven games, achieving a season-high of three tackles in a match against Austin Peay State University. His journey in collegiate football was marked by promise and growing potential.
