Boopie Miller’s last-second basket, scored with just 2.1 seconds remaining, secured a thrilling 79-77 victory for SMU over California Baptist on Tuesday during the Acrisure Holiday Invitational. The Mustangs, who had previously enjoyed a solid 16-point advantage in the second half, had to fend off a fierce comeback from the Lancers.
California Baptist, now at 4-3 for the season, mounted a strong resurgence led by Kendal Coleman, who tallied an impressive 32 points, 25 of which came during a gripping second half. The Lancers tied the score seven times, the final tie occurring when Dominique Daniels Jr. drove to the basket and scored with 15.7 seconds on the clock.
Following a timeout called by the Mustangs, Miller received the inbounds pass and managed the game clock effectively. He then executed a well-timed play off a ball screen, finishing with a smooth floater from approximately 10 feet away, clinching the win for SMU.
In a standout performance for the Mustangs, B.J. Edwards contributed 17 points, while Miller added 16 points. Kario Oquendo and Yohan Traore chipped in with 14 and 10 points, respectively. As a team, SMU recorded a solid shooting percentage of 53% and converted on 8 of their 20 attempts from beyond the arc.
For the Lancers, Coleman showcased exceptional shooting, hitting 12-of-16 from the field and making an impressive 6 of 8 3-pointers. Daniels supported with 16 points, and AJ Braun scored 12. California Baptist also demonstrated effective shooting, finishing the game at 52%.
SMU remained in control for most of the first half, finishing with a 45-32 lead by outpacing the Lancers 11-4 in the closing minutes of the period. The match was filled with competitive spirit and excitement, showcasing the skills of both teams on the court.
