LAIE, Hawaii — In a thrilling display of basketball, South Dakota State triumphed over No. 21 Oregon with a final score of 75-70 during the Hawaii North Shore Showcase on Tuesday. Brooklyn Meyer led the scoring for the Jackrabbits, contributing 19 points along with eight rebounds, while Paige Meyer added to their success with 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists.
A crucial moment came late in the game when Haleigh Timmer sank a 3-pointer with just 44 seconds remaining, extending South Dakota State’s lead to 72-66. A turnover by the Jackrabbits allowed Oregon’s Amina Muhammad to capitalize, scoring a fast-break layup that narrowed the margin to 72-70.
With 24.7 seconds on the clock, Timmer stepped to the free-throw line and converted one of her attempts, adding a point to bring the score to 73-70. After a time-out, Oregon’s Peyton Scott missed a 3-point shot, leading to Madison Mathiowetz sealing the game with two free throws, creating a safer two-possession lead.
The game was intensely competitive, featuring a total of nine ties and nine lead changes. Timmer finished the night with 15 points for South Dakota State, while teammate Madysen Vlastuin excelled with her shooting, making all three of her attempts from beyond the arc for a total of 11 points.
For Oregon, Deja Kelly was the standout performer, scoring 19 points, while Muhammad contributed 10 points along with eight rebounds as the Ducks sought to recover after a recent defeat against Georgia Tech.
Looking ahead, the Jackrabbits are set to face Ball State on Sunday, while Oregon will host Washington State in their next matchup on Wednesday.
