The Philadelphia 76ers are facing significant challenges as they prepare for their matchup against the Houston Rockets. Star players Joel Embiid and Paul George have both been ruled out for the third consecutive game due to left knee injuries. Embiid is suffering from swelling in his knee, while George has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in the same joint.
Moreover, six-time All-Star Kyle Lowry will also be sidelined for the game due to a hip strain. The ongoing absences of Embiid and George have severely impacted the team’s performance this season, resulting in a disappointing record of 3-13, leaving them second to last in the Eastern Conference, just above the Washington Wizards.
Reflecting on the team’s situation, George spoke during practice in Camden, New Jersey, stating, “We’ve all kind of looked in the mirror and faced what we’re up against. No one has said this is over. No one is doubting we can’t make a push.” This sentiment reflects a desire for resilience among the players amidst the adversity they are experiencing.
The highly anticipated trio of Embiid, George, and Tyrese Maxey has seen extremely limited time on the court together this season, with the three playing only a little over six minutes in a single game. George has participated in only eight out of the 16 games played so far, while Embiid has suited up for just four.
George, a nine-time All-Star, was partially involved in Wednesday’s practice session. Additionally, teammate Caleb Martin, who joined the team this season with a four-year, $32 million contract, did not take part in practice due to hip soreness and is considered questionable for the upcoming game.
George commented on the difficulties faced by the team, observing, “I saw something that we played 6 or 7 minutes together and we’re 16 games in. It’s challenging. You look at the guys that came here for that reason of playing alongside myself, Joel, and Tyrese. We’re asking them to do a lot in the absence of us.” This highlights the extra burden placed on the remaining players as they strive to compensate for the absence of their injured stars.
With significant financial commitments made to Maxey and George during the recent free agency, alongside Embiid’s substantial contract extension worth $193 million just before training camp, the 76ers are undeniably eager to see their key players return to the court and restore their competitive edge.
