MUNICH — During the UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday, Bayern Munich supporters expressed their disdain for Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi through a series of protests.
The crowd displayed a variety of banners that articulated their discontent with the Qatari executive.
One banner prominently featured Al-Khelaifi’s image crossed out, while another labeled him as “plutocratic” along with an expletive. Additional banners raised pointed questions such as, “Minister, club owner, TV rights holder, UEFA ExCo member & ECA chairman all in one?”
The 51-year-old Al-Khelaifi has garnered criticism from Bayern fans due to his considerable sway over European football, stemming from his roles as chairman of the European Club Association, head of Qatar Sports Investments—owners of PSG—and his involvement with the Qatari state-funded BeIN media group.
This discontent has historical roots, as Bayern supporters have long protested against their club’s partnerships with Qatari entities, which have faced severe human rights-related accusations, particularly highlighted during the lead-up to the 2022 World Cup.
Last year, in response to persistent fan protests, Bayern Munich opted not to renew its lucrative sponsorship arrangement with Qatar Airways. Reports from the Sueddeutsche Zeitung indicated that this decision was influenced by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who was reportedly displeased with the ongoing criticism from Bayern’s fanbase and the club’s apparent unwillingness to address the situation.
