SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — A tragic plane crash in the vicinity of Costa Rica’s capital resulted in the loss of five lives, leaving only one survivor, who is currently in serious condition at a local hospital, as reported by the Red Cross on Tuesday.

The survivor, a 31-year-old woman, was among six individuals aboard the small aircraft that went down to the southeast of San Jose.

According to the civil aviation authorities in the country, the Cessna 206 Stationair crashed near Pico Blanco mountain shortly after noon on Monday.

Rescue and search teams found the wreckage on the mountainside; however, it took several hours for them to reach the crash site. The Red Cross confirmed early Tuesday that the survivor had been successfully taken to the hospital.

All of the deceased were Costa Rican nationals, with ages ranging from 27 to 64, the Red Cross noted.

The ill-fated flight had taken off from Tortuguero, located on the northern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, and was headed toward San Jose. Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of this unfortunate incident.
