The NBA imposed a fine of $100,000 on the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday after its investigation confirmed that guard Trae Young was medically able to participate in an NBA Cup game against the Boston Celtics on November 12.
During that particular game, the Hawks had listed Young as unavailable due to tendinitis affecting his right Achilles. Regardless, Atlanta managed to secure a victory, edging out the Celtics with a score of 117-116.
The primary concern from the league stemmed from the Hawks’ infringement of the player participation policy, which mainly affects what the NBA categorizes as star players. Young, having been an All-Star last season, falls into this group. According to league regulations, teams are required to have their star players available for all NBA In-Season Tournament games and national television broadcasts unless a valid reason can be provided for their absence.
An independent medical review alongside the NHL’s investigation concluded that Young was fit to play, thus determining that the Hawks’ decision to hold him out violated the intended aims of the participation policy, which encourages player involvement throughout the NBA’s regular season.
This specific matchup against the Celtics marks the only game that Young has missed in the current season.
In another event, Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown faced a fine of $35,000 also on Tuesday for aggressively approaching a game official during live action.
Midway through the second quarter of a game against the Brooklyn Nets, Brown moved toward referee Scott Twardoski out of frustration over what he deemed a missed call. The Kings ultimately fell to the Nets, losing the game with a score of 108-103.
