North Carolina’s football head coach Mack Brown will not be back for the 2025 season.

North Carolina’s head coach Mack Brown, who holds the record for the most wins among all active coaches in the Bowl Subdivision, will not be returning for the 2025 season.

The announcement was made by the university on Tuesday via a statement released by athletic director Bubba Cunningham. He informed the 73-year-old Hall of Famer that a change in coaching staff would be taking place. Brown is scheduled to lead the team in its final regular-season game this Saturday against their long-time rival, N.C. State. However, it remains unclear whether he will continue to coach the team in a potential bowl game.

Despite having three years left on his contract, Brown expressed just a day prior his desire to return for a seventh season in his second term as the head coach of the Tar Heels. Previously, he held the same position at Texas, where he achieved great success, including winning a national championship in 2005.
