OTTAWA, Ontario — Brady Tkachuk netted a crucial power-play goal early in the third period, securing a 4-3 victory for the Ottawa Senators against the Calgary Flames on Monday night.
Adam Gaudette, Drake Batherson, and Cole Reinhardt also contributed goals for Ottawa, bringing an end to their five-game losing streak.
Jonathan Huberdeau was the first to score for the Flames, while teammates Yegor Sharangovich and Mikael Backlund added to the tally.
Ottawa’s goaltender Anton Forsberg put forth a commendable effort, making 24 saves, while Calgary’s Dustin Wolf recorded 26 stops in return.
Huberdeau’s power-play goal at 14:32 of the first period got the Flames on the board, and they seemed poised to extend their lead just 25 seconds later.
However, this second goal was overturned due to incidental contact with Forsberg. The Flames attempted to contest the decision but were unsuccessful, leading to an Ottawa power play.
Seizing the opportunity, the Senators struck back with Gaudette scoring just eight seconds after the power play ended, leveling the game.
Batherson’s power-play goal alongside Reinhardt securing his first career goal put Ottawa ahead 3-1.
The Flames did not back down, with Sharangovich narrowing the deficit when he capitalized on a clearing attempt by Nick Jensen, landing the puck right on his stick.
In terms of goaltending, Ottawa’s performance was notably improved, with Forsberg making vital saves that were especially crucial during their previous losing streak.
On the other hand, Calgary struggled with penalties, allowing Ottawa to convert on 2 of 9 power-play opportunities.
A significant moment in the game occurred when Forsberg made two critical saves on Sharangovich and Matt Coronato with only 1:42 left in the second period, while Ottawa held a 3-2 lead.
Interestingly, this match marked the sixth consecutive game where the Senators allowed the first goal but managed to secure victory, marking just their second win this season under such circumstances.
Looking ahead, the Flames are set to face the Red Wings on Wednesday, while the Senators will begin a three-game road trip against the Sharks on the same evening.
