TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama linebacker Deontae Lawson is set to miss the remainder of the season due to an injury.
Coach Kalen DeBoer described this injury as one affecting the lower extremities, confirming on Monday that Lawson will be sidelined for the upcoming match against Auburn as well as any postseason games.
Lawson sustained the injury during the first half of Alabama’s 24-3 defeat to Oklahoma, a loss that saw the team drop from seventh to thirteenth in the most recent AP Top 25 rankings.
Currently, Lawson ranks as the second-leading tackler for the Crimson Tide with a total of 76 tackles.
His contributions also include 6.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and four pass breakups.
Coach DeBoer expressed his admiration for Lawson, saying, “He is an incredible leader. He was chosen as a team captain by his peers. It’s evident how much he means to our team, not just in terms of his performance on the field, but also the affection the players have for him, especially those who have had the privilege to witness his dedication over the years.
We all feel for him during this tough time and are grateful for everything he has done.”
Furthermore, DeBoer emphasized the impact of Lawson’s absence, stating, “Of course, we will miss all that he contributes on the football field, but having him in the locker room to guide the team is invaluable.”
In Lawson’s absence, Justin Jefferson, who has recorded 45 tackles and two sacks this season, stepped in during the Oklahoma game and is anticipated to start against Auburn.
The Alabama squad has also faced setbacks with linebacker Que Robinson, who has been ruled out for the season due to an arm injury.
