The New York Jets are reaching out to a previous general manager to aid in their quest for a new general manager and head coach.

The 33rd Team, a media analytics and consultancy group established by ex-Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, is set to collaborate with team owner Woody Johnson during this search, as confirmed by a source close to the matter.

Tannenbaum, along with Rick Spielman, who previously held GM positions with the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions, will take the lead for The 33rd Team in locating successors for former coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas. This information was shared under the condition of anonymity on Monday since the team has yet to publicly disclose their search strategy.

Reports from ESPN and the New York Post were the first to disclose the Jets’ engagement of The 33rd Team for this purpose.

Douglas was dismissed last Tuesday, marking the latest upheaval for a franchise that had once set its sights on a Super Bowl run with a fit Aaron Rodgers at the helm but now finds itself struggling with a 3-8 record and is on the verge of missing the playoffs for the 14th year in a row.

Phil Savage, who has been a senior football adviser for the Jets since 2019, will step in as the interim general manager for the remainder of the season.

Douglas’s firing occurred exactly six weeks after Johnson also let go of Saleh, who was let go on October 8 after the team started the season with a 2-3 record. The Jets have since recorded just one win against five losses under Jeff Ulbrich, the defensive coordinator who is currently serving as the interim head coach.

Following their bye week, the Jets are preparing to host the Seattle Seahawks this coming Sunday.
