The Russian military has apprehended a British citizen who was reportedly fighting alongside Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region, which is partially held by Russia, according to a report from state news agency Tass on Monday, which cited anonymous sources within law enforcement.
The individual has been named by various media outlets, including Tass, as James Scott Rhys Anderson. The report indicates that Anderson has a background as a signalman in the British army, having served for four years before joining the International Legion of Ukraine, an entity established in response to the ongoing conflict that has spanned nearly three years between Russia and Ukraine.
While in Ukraine, Anderson is said to have worked as an instructor, providing training to Ukrainian forces. It has been reported that he was deployed to the Kursk region against his wishes. A video released by Tass features Anderson speaking in English, expressing his desire to not be in the situation he currently finds himself in.
Though the information from Tass has not been independently verified, if confirmed, this incident could mark the first known case of a Western individual being captured on Russian soil while supporting Ukrainian efforts.
At this time, there has been no immediate feedback from the U.K. Embassy in Moscow or the Russian Ministry of Defense regarding the situation.
