MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins were on the verge of trading veteran defensive tackle Calais Campbell to the Baltimore Ravens as the Nov. 5 trade deadline approached, but an intervention from head coach Mike McDaniel changed the course of action.
McDaniel humorously acknowledged that he may have exhibited some frustration during the discussions, which were initially reported by NFL Network.
At that stage, the Dolphins were struggling with a record of 2-6 and had dropped three consecutive games. Their performance had faltered significantly since starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was placed on injured reserve due to a concussion on Sept. 17, resulting in a disappointing 1-3 record in his absence.
Although Campbell would have had the opportunity to return to the competitive Ravens, the Dolphins would have received a fifth-round draft pick in 2026 in exchange, as per NFL Network. McDaniel believed that Campbell’s presence was crucial for the team’s future.
Following Miami’s 34-15 victory over the New England Patriots, Campbell expressed appreciation for being involved in critical discussions about the team’s direction. He noted the team’s desire to regroup and felt optimistic about their chances of recovery.
In comments that underscored the collaborative nature of the organization’s leadership, McDaniel indicated that the situation wasn’t merely about a disagreement between him and general manager Chris Grier. He emphasized the complex balance that Grier must maintain between immediate team performance and long-term organizational goals.
A seasoned veteran with 17 years in the league, Campbell signed with the Dolphins after a stint with the Atlanta Falcons last season. Teammates and coaches alike have commended the 38-year-old for his impactful contributions both on and off the field.
Defensive tackle Zach Sieler praised Campbell’s unparalleled work ethic and the positive energy he brings to the team. He noted that Campbell’s relentless attitude is a significant factor in his continued success at an advanced stage in his career.
Currently, Campbell leads the Dolphins with four sacks for the season. His remarkable performance in consecutive games in Weeks 10 and 11 made him one of only eight players aged 38 or older to achieve this feat since the 1970 merger. He has also recorded nine tackles for loss, marking a consistent achievement over his 17-year career.
Having played with the Ravens from 2020 to 2022, Campbell accumulated a total of 11 sacks and 113 tackles. McDaniel remarked on the tremendous value Campbell brings to the team, not just to the defensive line but to the entire squad. His leadership has been instrumental, particularly in how players respect his sustained excellence over the years.
Since the deadline, the Dolphins have managed to win three consecutive games, showcasing an improved defense that held the Patriots scoreless until the fourth quarter of their latest matchup.
In a familiar role, Campbell led the team’s pregame huddle and was seen mentoring rookie linebacker Chop Robinson, who frequently seeks his advice.
Reflecting on the organization’s operational dynamics, McDaniel expressed gratitude for a collaborative environment where he and the GM can communicate openly. He quipped that he was simply trying to avoid any further displays of frustration.
