EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — In an impressive display, Baker Mayfield soared into the end zone on a dazzling 10-yard run, contributing to Tampa Bay’s four rushing touchdowns in their decisive 30-7 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday. This win ended the Buccaneers’ recent four-game losing streak while deepening the Giants’ misery, marking their sixth consecutive defeat.
The Giants made headlines this week with their contentious decision to bench and subsequently release quarterback Daniel Jones, which did not aid the team that holds the title for the league’s least productive offense. Tommy DeVito, stepping in as the new starter, managed to pass for 189 yards, largely during a second half where the team was already trailing significantly in their ongoing home game losing streak.
On the other hand, the Buccaneers showcased a dominant performance across multiple aspects of the game, highlighted by touchdown runs of 1 yard from Sean Tucker, 6 yards from Bucky Irving, and another 1 yard from Rachaad White. After facing losses against the Ravens, 49ers, and Chiefs, Tampa Bay improved their record to 5-6, inching closer to the idle Atlanta team in the NFC South standings.
The Buccaneers effectively utilized their offensive prowess, scoring on five of their first six possessions to build a commanding 30-0 advantage. The highlight came just before halftime, with Mayfield’s courageous touchdown run. On a vital second-and-goal situation from the 10-yard line, he skillfully evaded pressure before launching himself into the end zone. Despite being hit hard by defenders Cor’Dale Flott and Dru Phillips, Mayfield emerged airborne as he crossed into the end zone—where he playfully mimicked DeVito’s signature celebration as Tampa Bay asserted a substantial 23-0 lead.
Mayfield concluded the game with an impressive 24 completions in 30 attempts, accumulating 294 yards. His key receiver, Mike Evans, marked his return after missing three games due to a hamstring issue, contributing five receptions for 68 yards. Bucky Irving shined in the running game as well, racking up 87 rushing yards alongside six catches for 64 yards receiving.
The Buccaneers’ defense stifled the Giants in the first half, allowing only three first downs and a mere 45 total yards, while finishing the game with an impressive 450 yards compared to the Giants’ 245. DeVito managed a 17-yard run in the fourth quarter which set up a 1-yard touchdown for Devin Singletary. However, the New Jersey native, who had previously energized the Giants last season, struggled in his first outing of the current year, facing four sacks, including one that forced him to momentarily leave the field.
Injuries played a role in the matchup, with the Buccaneers missing starting left tackle Tristan Wirfs due to a knee issue, prompting Justin Skule to step in. Additionally, the team lost outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to an ankle injury in the second quarter and safety Jordan Whitehead to a pectoral injury later in the game. For the Giants, left tackle Jermaine Eluemunor and outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari were both injured in the first quarter and did not return.
Looking ahead, the Buccaneers will face the Carolina Panthers next Sunday, while the Giants will head to Dallas for a Thanksgiving clash.
