COLUMBUS, Ohio — Freshman guard Ava Watson made a significant impact off the bench, scoring 20 points and hitting six 3-pointers to help No. 12 Ohio State secure a dominating 96-53 win against Bowling Green on Sunday.
Watson was impressive from long range, making 6 of her 10 attempts while shooting 1 of 4 closer to the basket. In her last two outings, she has scored 30 of her total 37 points this season. Chance Gray also contributed to the victory, scoring 18 points, including three 3-pointers, and hitting 50% of her shots.
In addition to Watson and Gray, Taylor Thierry had a flawless outing, scoring 17 points on 6-for-6 shooting, which included two 3-pointers, along with six rebounds and three steals. Jaloni Cambridge provided valuable assistance with 17 points, six assists, and five boards, while Kennedy Cambridge added 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals to the team’s total.
For the Falcons, Amy Velasco was the standout player, leading her team with 24 points. She shot 50% from the field, making 8 of 16 attempts, including one 3-pointer, and was perfect at the free-throw line, sinking all seven attempts. Despite her efforts, Bowling Green fell to 2-4 for the season, losing all four of their away games.
In the first quarter, Thierry’s early contributions helped Ohio State establish a 23-12 lead. Watson then extended the margin to 47-23 by halftime with her shooting performance in the second quarter, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers.
Gray excelled in the third quarter, scoring 12 points and completing all three of her attempts from beyond the arc, as Ohio State increased its lead to 76-35. The Buckeyes were efficient on offense, shooting an impressive 50% overall from the field, including 12 of 26 from three-point range (46.2%), and converting on 10 of 15 free-throw attempts.
Bowling Green struggled offensively, finishing the game with a shooting percentage of 35.1%. They made just 3 of 15 from beyond the arc and converted 10 of their 15 opportunities at the foul line.
Next, the Buckeyes will travel to the Daytona Beach Classic, beginning on Friday with a matchup against Old Dominion. Meanwhile, Bowling Green will also participate in the tournament, facing Stetson in the opening round.
