GREEN BAY, Wis. — The San Francisco 49ers will be without left tackle Trent Williams this Sunday, marking a significant absence as quarterback Brandon Allen prepares for his first start since the 2021 season.
Williams, a three-time All-Pro, is among the team’s inactives for the matchup against the Green Bay Packers (7-3) due to an ankle injury that sidelined him throughout the week. Jaylon Moore is set to step in as the starting left tackle in Williams’ absence.
The situation for the 49ers (5-5) worsened on Friday when they announced that starting quarterback Brock Purdy would not participate in the game due to soreness in his throwing shoulder. Additionally, standout edge rusher Nick Bosa will also miss the game due to a hip and oblique injury.
With Purdy out, the 32-year-old Allen will make his 10th career start, and his first since the Cincinnati Bengals’ last game of the 2021 regular season, during which they chose to rest Joe Burrow for the playoffs. Allen has not thrown a pass since he joined the 49ers last year, and prior to that, he attempted just three passes with the Bengals in 2022. His prior starts have resulted in a 2-7 record.
Adding to the team’s challenges, cornerback Charvarius Ward is also inactive for the third consecutive game following the heartbreaking passing of his one-year-old daughter. The 49ers have also ruled out linebacker Tatum Bethune (knee), wide receiver Jacob Cowing (concussion), and defensive tackle Kevin Givens (groin) before the game.
Another inactive player for San Francisco is defensive lineman Khalil Davis.
On the other side, the Green Bay Packers will be missing cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee) and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper (hamstring). Both players were ruled out on Friday as well. Other Packers who will not play include safety Kitan Oladapo and offensive lineman Jacob Monk.
However, defensive lineman Colby Wooden (shoulder), who was listed as questionable, has been cleared to play in Sunday’s game.
