AMMAN, Jordan — In a recent incident in the Rabiah district of Amman, authorities reported that a man was fatally shot by police after he fired a weapon near the Israeli Embassy early Sunday morning.

During the confrontation, three police officers sustained injuries, although details regarding the shooter’s identity and the reasons behind his actions remain unclear at this time.

Jordan has historically maintained a close relationship with Western nations and established a peace agreement with Israel in 1994. However, tensions have escalated following Israel’s ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip, which were ignited by Hamas’ assault on October 7, 2023. The situation has impacted Jordan, a nation that is home to a significant Palestinian populace, leading to numerous protests outside the Israeli Embassy, where demonstrators have occasionally faced off against law enforcement.

According to a statement issued by Jordan’s Public Security Directorate, police initiated a pursuit of the man after he discharged his firearm. The statement elaborated, “He was pursued and cornered, prompting him to shoot at the security forces, who then followed the established rules of engagement, resulting in the gunman’s death.”

This incident follows a significant event from September when a retired Jordanian soldier was involved in a separate shooting, which left three Israelis dead at the border crossing between Jordan and the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The shooter, identified as Maher al-Jazi, was subsequently killed by Israeli security personnel.

The current political situation and related violence in the region continue to create challenging dynamics for Jordan, reinforcing the need for careful handling of relations both internally and with neighboring countries.
