Georgetown’s Ed Cooley issues apology for offensive remark regarding Illinois

Georgetown’s basketball head coach, Ed Cooley, recently expressed regret on social media for an inappropriate remark he made regarding the University of Illinois following his team’s victory over Saint Francis.
Cooley commented on the defensive improvements of junior guard Jayden Epps, who had previously played his freshman year at Illinois. After the Hoyas triumphed with an 82-65 score, he reflected on Epps’ growth, suggesting it was akin to observing a “new player.” This comment referenced Epps’ past at Illinois and seemingly aimed to highlight his current development.
In a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Cooley stated, “My comment today was said in jest with one of my players, but I admit it was a poor choice of words. I have the utmost respect for the University of Illinois, its men’s basketball program, coaches and players.”
When questioned about Cooley’s statements, Illinois head coach Brad Underwood chose to concentrate on their upcoming games rather than engage with the remarks.
“That’s not even worth a waste of my time on,” Underwood commented. “I don’t know what he was referencing that about, and Jayden had a productive freshman year here. But I’m not going to get into all that. I’ll let our fans and everybody else have some fun, which I’m sure they probably are.”
As the season progresses, the excitement surrounding college basketball remains high, with fans eagerly awaiting updates and poll alerts.
