KENNESAW, Ga. — In a thrilling finish, Davis Bryson scored a 19-yard touchdown with just six minutes remaining, and Austin Welch successfully kicked a 19-yard field goal, leading Kennesaw State to an exciting 27-26 comeback victory over Florida International on Saturday night.
The Owls initially gained a significant advantage, taking a 17-6 lead with 3:48 left in the second quarter. This came after Preston Daniels completed a 60-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. However, the Panthers responded quickly as Keyone Jenkins threw two touchdown passes, connecting with Dean Patterson for a 20-yarder and later hitting Eric Rivers with a 42-yard pass just before halftime, which allowed FIU to take a narrow 20-17 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, FIU extended its lead to 26-17 as Robert Czeremcha successfully kicked field goals from 36 and 34 yards. Kennesaw State faced a challenging situation but managed to force the Panthers into a three-and-out midway through the final quarter. This pivotal defensive stop allowed Bryson to lead the Owls, completing passes to Gabriel Benyard for 8 yards and Carson Kent for 24 yards, setting up his own touchdown run of 19 yards.
Not stopping there, Kennesaw State’s defense intensified, sacking Jenkins and recovering the ensuing fumble through Tylon Dunlap at the FIU 33-yard line. The Owls quickly moved downfield, needing just eight plays to cover 32 yards, culminating in the game-winning field goal by Welch.
Looking ahead, Kennesaw State will finish its season with a matchup against Louisiana Tech on Saturday, while Florida International will wrap up its season at home against Middle Tennessee State.
