LORMAN, Mississippi — In a decisive performance on Saturday, Jackson State triumphed over Alcorn State with a score of 48-10. Quarterback Jacobian Morgan showcased his skills, throwing two touchdown passes and adding a touchdown run of his own, while Irv Mulligan contributed significantly with 105 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Morgan sparked the scoring for the Tigers (10-2, 8-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) with a remarkable 57-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Spencer on a single-play drive, establishing a 7-0 lead early in the game. Following that, Mulligan extended the Tigers’ advantage with a 5-yard touchdown run, putting Jackson State up 14-0.
As the second quarter unfolded, Morgan demonstrated his dual-threat capability by running in a touchdown from 7 yards out. Additionally, Gerardo Baeza made his presence felt with two successful field goals, bringing the halftime score to 27-7 in favor of Jackson State.
The third quarter kicked off with Morgan connecting with Joanes Fortillien for a 44-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead further to 34-10. Morgan then found the end zone again with a 9-yard rushing touchdown, driving the score to 41-10. The Tigers capped the game with a 1-yard rushing touchdown from Zy McDonald in the fourth quarter, solidifying their commanding win.
Morgan’s overall performance was impressive, completing 12 of 20 passes for a total of 211 yards and also rushing six times for 53 yards. Mulligan was a workhorse in the backfield, carrying the ball 14 times with a long run of 28 yards. On the opposing side, Xzavier Vaughn managed to complete 11 of 20 passes for 94 yards with one interception for Alcorn State (6-6, 5-3). The Braves’ Jacorian Sewell was notable, rushing 14 times for 119 yards, including a spectacular 82-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
Looking forward, Jackson State will face off against Southern, the East Division winner, for the conference championship on December 7.
