COLUMBIA, S.C. — LaNorris Sellers showcased his impressive skills, throwing for 307 yards along with three touchdowns while completing 23 out of 27 passes in a commanding 56-12 victory for No. 19 South Carolina against Wofford on Saturday evening.
While the Gamecocks (8-3, 5-3 SEC, ranked No. 18 in the College Football Playoff) didn’t play a flawless game, with two turnovers and several penalties, they managed to maintain their advantage throughout and avoided any significant injuries. Starters were given most of the fourth quarter off, allowing some fresh legs for future games.
Sellers, a redshirt freshman, continues to emerge as a top quarterback in the conference. In addition to his passing performance, he contributed significantly with his feet, averaging over four yards per carry on 13 rushing attempts. Raheim Sanders added to the offense with 72 rushing yards, and Dalevon Campbell made a notable impact by pulling down five receptions for 120 yards.
Wofford (5-7) initially took the lead with a 3-0 score and even intercepted Sellers on his opening drive. However, the early success was short-lived, as the Terriers extended their losing streak against South Carolina to 18 games, the last victory dating way back to 1917.
For Wofford, a notable financial boost comes from their appearance at South Carolina, receiving $600,000 for their participation. For South Carolina, it was more than just the victory; they were also keeping an eye on the results from other games within the College Football Playoff rankings. Several teams positioned above them suffered losses, creating the potential for the Gamecocks to improve their standing. To further solidify their chances for playoff contention, a win against Clemson in the upcoming week would present them with a compelling case among other three-loss teams.
Following this game, South Carolina is hoping to climb the rankings, especially with both BYU and Colorado from the Big 12 dropping in the AP Top 25.
Looking ahead, Wofford will not be part of the FCS playoff bracket set to be announced on Sunday. In contrast, South Carolina is gearing up to face their fierce in-state rival, Clemson, next Saturday, where they’ll be aiming to break a streak of eight losses in their last nine encounters against the Tigers.
