SMITHFIELD, R.I. — In an exciting matchup on Saturday, Malik Grant showcased an impressive performance, accumulating 204 rushing yards and scoring three touchdowns to lead Rhode Island to a 35-21 victory over Bryant. This win marked a significant milestone for Rhode Island, as they claimed their first league championship in 39 years.
With this victory, Rhode Island improved to 10-2 overall and 7-1 in the Coastal Athletic Association, capturing their seventh institutional title. Notably, all their previous championships were acquired in the Yankee Conference. The Rams also matched their program’s record for the most wins in a single season, achieving a feat previously accomplished in 1984 and repeated in 1985.
Quarterback Hunter Helms contributed to the win by throwing for 209 yards and accounting for one touchdown despite tossing an interception. In addition to his stellar rushing performance, Grant also recorded his first touchdown reception of the season.
After halftime, Grant wasted no time, rushing for 47 yards on the first play. He further added to his team’s score by completing a drive with a 4-yard touchdown catch, giving Rhode Island a 20-14 advantage. An interception by Braden Price shortly afterward put Rhode Island back in scoring position, allowing Grant to rush for another touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, Bryant found the end zone, narrowing the score to a one-possession game, but Rhode Island countered with a methodical 15-play, 72-yard drive that culminated in another 3-yard touchdown run by Grant.
Grant’s 13 rushing touchdowns this season ties him for the single-season record at Rhode Island, a feat previously held by Ja’Den McKenzie who set the mark last year.
On the other side, Bryant’s Brennan Myer finished the game with 189 passing yards, throwing for two touchdowns but also recording two interceptions. Dylan Kedzior contributed with 80 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Landon Ruggieri had a solid receiving game with eight catches for 105 yards and a score.
