TURIN, Italy — New Zealand delivered a commanding performance against Italy during their final match of the autumn rugby series, winning 29-11 on Saturday.

The All Blacks aimed to conclude 2024 on a high note, particularly in honor of veterans Sam Cane and TJ Perenara, who are departing the team.

Despite being on the receiving end of a significant defeat last year at the Rugby World Cup — 96-17 — Italy showed tremendous heart and determination, managing to hold New Zealand to their lowest score in this rivalry for the past 15 years.

Throughout the match, New Zealand maintained a slim lead of 17-6 until the closing minutes, when they managed to score tries through players Mark Tele’a and Beauden Barrett while Italy was reduced to 14 men.

Italy’s sole try came from Tommaso Menoncello, who received an assist from his teammate Juan Ignacio Brex.

The All Blacks managed to score earlier in the game despite a yellow card issued to captain Scott Barrett in the first half. The tries came from scrumhalf Cam Roigard and fullback Will Jordan, achieving his impressive 38th try in just 41 test matches.

However, the New Zealand side continued to struggle with poor ball handling after halftime, facing significant pressure as Italy camped on their try line for an extended series of 20 phases. The All Blacks eventually escaped without conceding, although they did see Anton Lienert-Brown issued a yellow card.

Boosted by substitutions, including a spirited appearance from Perenara, who performed his final All Blacks haka, New Zealand attempted to capitalize on their forwards’ solid set-piece work. Nevertheless, the backs had a challenging time breaking through Italy’s tenacious defense.
