SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers will be without their starting quarterback, Brock Purdy, for the upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers due to a sore throwing shoulder.

Purdy sustained the shoulder injury in last week’s defeat against the Seattle Seahawks. Although he underwent an MRI that indicated no structural damage, the discomfort in his shoulder did not lessen throughout the week, leading to his absence from Sunday’s matchup.

In addition to Purdy, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that defensive star Nick Bosa will also be sidelined due to injuries affecting his left hip and oblique. Left tackle Trent Williams is listed as questionable due to an ankle injury, with his availability to be determined just prior to kickoff.

This marks the first occasion that Purdy will miss a start due to injury since he became the 49ers’ signal-caller in December 2022. Brandon Allen is set to take over as the starter in his absence.

Currently holding a record of 5-5, the 49ers find themselves in a three-way tie for second place in the NFC West, just one game behind division leader Arizona. With playoff aspirations on the line, the team is keenly aware that they must improve their performance to replicate last season’s success, which saw them reach the Super Bowl.

This season, Purdy has performed at a completion rate of 66%, racking up 2,613 passing yards, with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. His passer rating stands at 95.9, a noticeable drop from his league-leading score of 113 in 2023.

Brandon Allen, who has primarily served as a backup since being drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016, will now step into a starting role. His last outing as a starter was in Week 18 of the 2021 season for the Cincinnati Bengals, and he has only thrown three passes over the past three seasons, none of which took place during his tenure with the 49ers since 2023.

Joshua Dobbs is expected to serve as the backup for this Sunday’s game.
