LOS ANGELES — Right-handed pitcher Dustin May has signed a one-year contract valued at $2,135,000 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, securing his position ahead of the Friday deadline for tenders. May has faced multiple injuries, keeping him off the field since May 2023.
As a member of the Dodgers’ 2020 World Series-winning team, May has struggled to make a significant impact since then, totaling only 20 starts in the last few seasons. His injury issues began with Tommy John surgery on May 12, 2021, which came shortly after he exited a game against the Milwaukee Brewers during the second inning. At that time, he had thrown a fastball at 94.3 mph to Billy McKinney but felt discomfort in his elbow, with manager Dave Roberts noting that May experienced a shooting sensation while throwing a curveball earlier in that at-bat.
After making a comeback on August 20, 2022, May faced another setback during a game against the Minnesota Twins on May 17, 2023. He left the game after just one inning due to a drop in fastball velocity, recording speeds approximately 2 mph lower than his season average. Following another Tommy John procedure on July 18, 2023, it is anticipated that May will return to action in the latter part of the 2024 season. In addition to his previous injuries, May underwent surgery in July to address a tear in his esophagus.
Throughout his five seasons with the Dodgers, May has made 34 starts along with 12 appearances in relief, amassing a record of 12 wins and 9 losses with a respectable earned run average of 3.10. He is set to become a free agent after the conclusion of the 2025 World Series.
