Temwa Chawinga of Kansas City Current awarded NWSL Most Valuable Player

Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga was recognized as the Most Valuable Player in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) on Friday.

Originally from Malawi, Chawinga made a significant impact after joining the Current this season, finishing the year with a record-setting 20 goals, which earned her the coveted Golden Boot award.

She achieved remarkable feats, including an impressive eight-game scoring streak and becoming the first player to net goals against every team in the league during a single season—this was particularly notable since the league’s expansion to 10 teams.

In addition to her scoring prowess, Chawinga contributed six assists, setting a new record for combined goal contributions in a single season.

“Temwa has made incredible strides this season over a short period, and she plays a crucial role for our team. Without a doubt, she is the MVP of both our team and the league,” stated Kansas City Current coach Vlatko Andonovski. “Her contributions on both offense and defense are vital, and she embodies what it means to be a great teammate.”

The NWSL announced its annual award winners just ahead of the championship match scheduled for Saturday between the Orlando Pride and the Washington Spirit, taking place at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City.

Chawinga stood out among a competitive field of finalists for the MVP award, which included players such as Orlando’s Barbra Banda and Marta, Washington’s Trinity Rodman, and Portland’s Sophia Smith. The winners were determined through votes cast by players, team staff, media representatives, and fans.

In addition to Chawinga’s honor, other awards were presented, with Pride center back Emily Sams claiming Defender of the Year after helping her team concede only 20 goals this season, tying for the lowest in the league.

Croix Bethune from the Spirit was honored with both Midfielder of the Year and Rookie of the Year titles, while Ann-Katrin Berger of Gotham was named Goalkeeper of the Year.

Seb Hines of the Pride received the Coach of the Year award, and Bay FC defender Jen Beattie was recognized with the Lauren Holiday Impact Award for 2024.
