DALLAS — Southern Methodist University (SMU) has secured a contract extension for head coach Rhett Lashlee, as the No. 13-ranked Mustangs are poised for a significant opportunity in their inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) season. The announcement of the extension took place on Friday, coinciding with preparations for the upcoming game against Virginia, where a win would guarantee a spot in the conference championship match. Specific terms of the contract extension have not been revealed just yet.

Currently, the Mustangs boast an impressive record of 9 wins and 1 loss, along with a perfect 6-0 in the ACC, further solidifying their position in the College Football Playoff rankings, where they also hold the 13th spot. The victor of the ACC is set to receive an automatic berth in the playoffs, along with a potential first-round bye, which enhances the stakes for SMU’s upcoming games.

In Lashlee’s three seasons at the helm, the Mustangs have achieved a commendable overall record of 27 wins and 10 losses, including an influx of 18 victories over their last 20 contests. Their previous season in the American Athletic Conference concluded with a championship title, showcasing Lashlee’s ability to lead successfully.

The transition to a power conference has not been without its challenges. The Mustangs initially struggled in their first game against Nevada, where they were heavily favored but started at a significant disadvantage before managing a comeback to secure victory. Additionally, their nine-game winning streak at home was disrupted by a loss to BYU in the third game of the season, although BYU had a strong season before their setback against Kansas.

Lashlee’s rapid ascent to success in a major conference makes him a leading candidate for coaching positions at other universities; however, SMU is well-supported financially by its donors, which might aid in retaining him.

Athletic Director Rick Hart expressed confidence in Lashlee, emphasizing that his selection during the 2021 coaching search was an informed decision that has been justified by the achievements of Lashlee and his team. Hart highlighted the ongoing evolution in college athletics and noted that Lashlee’s role as a leader has been integral during this period of change.

Lashlee was appointed to his position following the departure of Sonny Dykes, who moved to TCU after overseeing three successful seasons that included an undefeated 8-0 start in 2019.
