Chicago has made a move to bolster its roster by signing catcher Matt Thaiss to a one-year deal. The agreement stipulates that Thaiss will earn $1 million while playing in the major leagues and $400,000 if he is assigned to the minor leagues.
Thaiss joined the Cubs after being traded from the Los Angeles Angels, who had placed him on waivers on November 14.
The 29-year-old catcher made his major league debut in 2019 and has since spent all six of his MLB seasons with the Angels. Over this period, he has recorded a batting average of .208, hit 22 home runs, and driven in 79 runs. In the current season, Thaiss played in 57 games, where he had a .204 average with two home runs and 16 RBIs from 157 at-bats.
This acquisition reflects the Cubs’ strategy to improve their roster and add depth behind the plate.
