The Los Angeles Chargers have secured another high-profile game as they prepare for a prime time appearance. Their scheduled home game against the Denver Broncos has been moved from Sunday, December 22, to Thursday night, December 19. This change marks the first time a game has been transferred to the Thursday night slot under the league’s new guidelines.
The NFL modified its flex policy last season, allowing for games in Weeks 13 through 17 to be reassigned for Thursday nights, provided there is at least 28 days’ notice. This enables teams to potentially appear multiple times on Amazon Prime Video’s extensive 16-game lineup. However, the league can only flex two games during this five-week window.
The game between these AFC West rivals, both vying for playoff berths, pushes the previously scheduled matchup between the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals to Sunday afternoon. Despite the recent appointment of Jim Harbaugh as head coach, the Chargers were among six teams that did not have a Thursday night slot when the NFL schedule was announced back in May.
This is not the first time the Chargers have been promoted to prime time this season. They recently celebrated a 34-27 win over the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday, which was featured on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” taking the place of a game between the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets.
Currently, the Chargers hold a 7-3 record and are on a four-game winning streak. They are set to host the Baltimore Ravens on “Monday Night Football” for the third meeting between brothers John and Jim Harbaugh as head coaches. Furthermore, the Chargers will also appear on Sunday night when they face the Kansas City Chiefs on December 8.
Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos, who stand at 6-5, played a Thursday night game on October 17 and secured a solid victory against the Saints, winning 33-10 in coach Sean Payton’s return to New Orleans. The Broncos have a Monday night matchup against the Browns scheduled for December 2.
Earlier in the season, the Chargers defeated the Broncos 23-16 in Denver on October 13. This game notably included a moment where Coach Harbaugh had to briefly step into the locker room due to an irregular heartbeat.
