LAS VEGAS – Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time Formula 1 champion, showcased impressive skills by topping both practice sessions at the Las Vegas Grand Prix on Thursday evening, just two weeks following a particularly disappointing race in Brazil.
The Mercedes driver expressed his frustration over his performance in Brazil, hinting after the race that he was unsure whether to continue competing in the last three races of the season. Hamilton is set to transition to Ferrari at the conclusion of this season.
Reflecting on his Brazilian race, which he deemed “undriveable” and described as “the bumpiest ride ever,” Hamilton admitted he was reluctant to return to the track. He finished the race in 10th place, which only added to his disappointment. “If this is the last time that I get to perform, it’s a shame it wasn’t great, but (I’m) grateful for you,” he communicated to his team via radio after that challenging outing.
In Las Vegas, Hamilton elaborated on those initial sentiments, recounting the level of frustration he experienced in Brazil. “In the moment, that’s how I felt,” he reflected. “I didn’t really want to come back after that weekend, but I think that’s only natural. It’s frustrating when you have a season like this, which I’m pretty sure I won’t have again, or at least I’ll work towards not having again. It wasn’t a great feeling in that moment but I’m here, I’m standing strong, and I’m going to give it absolutely everything for the last few races.”
Hamilton displayed his resilience by leading both the first and second practice sessions in Las Vegas. In the second session, he was followed closely in performance by championship contender Lando Norris from McLaren and his Mercedes teammate George Russell.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, who only requires a three-point advantage over Norris during Saturday night’s event, struggled in the second practice, finishing in 17th place. During the opening practice, Hamilton and Russell secured the top two spots, with Norris coming in third, while Verstappen fared somewhat better in fifth place for Red Bull.
