SEOUL, South Korea — A high-ranking official from South Korea has revealed that Russia has handed over anti-aircraft missiles to North Korea as a part of a deal involving North Korean troops.
According to reports from the United States, South Korea, and additional sources, it is estimated that North Korea has dispatched over 10,000 soldiers to Russia to aid in its ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The nature of what Russia is providing to North Korea in return for this military support has drawn significant scrutiny.
In a recent appearance on an SBS television program, National Security Director Shin Wonsik reported that South Korean intelligence has determined that Russia has supplied anti-aircraft missiles and various other military equipment to enhance the air defense capabilities of Pyongyang, the capital city of North Korea.
Shin also indicated that Russia is offering a range of economic support to North Korea.
Concerns have been expressed by both Seoul and Washington regarding the potential for Russia to transfer sensitive nuclear and missile technologies to North Korea, which could further complicate the security landscape in the region.
