Khadija Shaw was instrumental in Manchester City’s progression to the Women’s Champions League quarterfinals, scoring two goals in a 2-1 victory over Hammarby, a Swedish club, on Thursday.
City maintained its flawless record in the tournament, winning all four of its matches, and advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2021, with two games still remaining in Group D.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich settled for a 1-1 draw against Vålerenga in Norway, and they still have a chance to qualify for the quarterfinals if Juventus were to lose against Arsenal later in the day.
Manchester City now joins Chelsea, Lyon, and Real Madrid in the last eight, with Arsenal potentially following suit if they secure a win against Juventus.
City sits atop Group D with 12 points, substantially ahead of two-time defending champions Barcelona, who were set to play against Austrian side St. Pölten later that same day. St. Pölten has yet to register a point, while Hammarby remains with three.
In Group C, Bayern leads with 10 points, followed by Arsenal with six, Juventus with three, and Vålerenga with one.
After suffering their first defeat of the season—losing 2-0 to Chelsea in the Women’s Super League on Saturday—Manchester City bounced back decisively. Despite the absence of injured star Vivianne Miedema, Shaw stepped up remarkably, showcasing her scoring ability after just half an hour of play.
She found the net with a deflected shot from inside the penalty area that sailed over goalkeeper Anna Tamminen, effectively silencing the crowd of over 20,000 at the Stockholm Arena.
Ellen Wangerheim brought Hammarby back into contention shortly after halftime, scoring from close range and reviving the spirits of the home supporters. But Shaw quickly responded for City, netting her second goal minutes later with a powerful right-footed strike from the edge of the box.
In the match involving Bayern Munich, the team held the majority of possession but struggled to convert that control into goals until the 75th minute. They managed to take the lead when substitute Jovana Damnjanovi? finished a play initiated by Giulia Gwinn.
However, Vålerenga equalized in the final moments of the game, with Elise Thorsnes scoring a header from a corner in the 88th minute.
Pernille Harder, who had netted five goals for Bayern in the prior three matches, was unable to find the back of the net this time and was substituted during the game.
