DENVER — Julian Lewis, a highly regarded quarterback from high school, has officially committed to the University of Colorado, which may suggest that Coach Deion Sanders intends to remain in Boulder for the foreseeable future.

The five-star recruit recently backed out of his commitment to Southern California to weigh other possibilities. He announced his decision to join Colorado during an appearance on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show,” while sporting a Buffaloes stocking cap.

Lewis is likely to take over the starting position from Shedeur Sanders, who is projected to be a top pick in the upcoming NFL draft. A video shared on Lewis’ Instagram shows a memorable moment of Sanders passing the quarterback role to the talented newcomer.

This addition gives Deion Sanders yet another elite quarterback to develop at Colorado. On Tuesday, Sanders addressed rumors surrounding his future with the program.

“I’m very positive about my current situation,” he expressed. “I truly enjoy being here.” His current team is showcasing several young talents, including freshman left tackle Jordan Seaton, contributing significantly this season.

“There’s no plans to leave,” Sanders confirmed. “We’re here to settle in.”

Lewis, also known by his nickname “Ju Ju,” became the starting quarterback at Carrollton High School in Georgia during his freshman year. Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 185 pounds, he earned the title of Gatorade Georgia Football Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season.

So far this season, he has thrown for an impressive 2,842 yards and 40 touchdowns, while only throwing four interceptions, according to MaxPreps. His completion rate is an outstanding 77.8%.

“Joining Colorado after Shedeur and observing his impact here is monumental for me,” Lewis mentioned during his appearance on McAfee’s show. “It’s a significant opportunity to find myself in this situation, especially with his father at the helm.”

“Coach Prime emphasizes that the best player will earn the starting role. That’s what I aimed for: the chance to compete… Sitting on the bench isn’t my preference; I want to come where I can actually play.”

Lewis shared his decision with Deion Sanders over a phone call and plans to join the Buffaloes (8-2, 6-1 Big 12, ranked No. 16 in the CFP) this upcoming spring.

“Julian is passionate about competition; he’s very enthusiastic for the challenges that college football brings,” said TC Lewis, Julian’s father. “The developmental opportunities and pathway to play that Coach Prime and Colorado offer are truly exceptional.”
