FC Cincinnati has officially announced the signing of Togo international striker Kévin Denkey from Belgian club Cercle Brugge on a deal that extends to 2028. The Major League Soccer (MLS) team referred to this move as a “historic transfer.”
Although the exact transfer fee was not disclosed, it is reported that Denkey’s acquisition cost around $16.2 million, making it both a club record and the highest transfer fee in MLS history. Previously, the largest transfer fee in the league was associated with Thiago Almada’s transfer to Atlanta United in 2022, although no fee details were released for that transaction.
According to the club, Denkey will officially become a designated player when the primary transfer window opens for MLS in 2025. Additionally, the contract contains an option for Cincinnati to retain him until 2029.
Denkey has enjoyed a robust international career, having played 38 matches for the Togo national team and netting nine goals. He was also the leading scorer in the Belgian league last season, amassing 27 goals, which was eight more than his nearest competitor. This season, he has already recorded seven goals in just 13 league appearances.
FC Cincinnati general manager Chris Albright expressed enthusiasm about adding Denkey to the team, highlighting his talent and character. He noted, “Kévin has been one of the most productive forwards in Europe over the last two years, showcasing elite physicality, finishing ability, and work ethic.” Albright added that this signing marks a significant milestone for both the club and the league, emphasizing the commitment of the ownership to invest in the team and its aspirations to pursue trophies.
