Other notable contributions came from Adam Miller, who tallied 16 points, while Alston Mason, BJ Freeman, Basheer Jihad, and Quaintance each added double-digit figures, with Quaintance also grabbing 12 rebounds for the Sun Devils, who improved their season record to 5-1.
Arizona State maintained a lead throughout most of the second half, but Cal Poly fought valiantly to stay in the game. The Mustangs, who are now 3-3, narrowed the score after Kieran Elliott converted a layup, followed by Peter Bandelj’s three-point play, bringing the score to 59-51 with 15 minutes left on the clock. As the game progressed, Cal Poly continued to apply pressure; with just over four minutes remaining, Bandelj again executed a three-point play, bringing his team within just one point at 77-76.
With the pressure mounting, Jihad managed to make one of two from the charity stripe to edge Arizona State ahead at 82-80 with 2:25 left in regulation. A missed three-pointer from Cal Poly’s Jarred Hyder followed, allowing Jihad to return to the free-throw line, where he successfully converted both attempts to extend ASU’s lead.
In a late-game push, Hyder hit a three-pointer with just 16 seconds remaining, cutting the deficit to 89-87. However, Sanon and Hyder each went to the line and made their shots, and Freeman ultimately sealed the victory for Arizona State by sinking two free throws in the last seconds of the game.
