A former urologist has received a life sentence for the sexual abuse of numerous patients, including minors, over several years in the New York region. Darius A. Paduch, age 57, was convicted in May after a trial where 11 individuals shared their traumatic experiences, and many others provided written testimonies to the court, according to federal prosecutors.
Despite his conviction, Paduch has upheld his innocence, claiming that certain physical examinations he conducted were necessary for medical reasons. The prosecution described a lengthy period of abuse that took place at a well-known Manhattan hospital from 2007 until 2019. After his time there, Paduch allegedly continued his illicit conduct at a new hospital on Long Island. One incident included inviting a victim onto his boat, where he reportedly administered sedatives before sexually assaulting him.
The U.S. Attorney, Damian Williams, condemned Paduch’s actions, stating, “He exploited his status as an esteemed urologist in leading hospitals to prey on vulnerable patients, including children, to fulfill his own sexual urges. The abuse was not only disturbing but also widespread, lasting over a decade and affecting individuals both within and outside medical facilities.”
Paduch’s attorney, Michael Baldassare, announced that they intend to appeal the verdict in the forthcoming days. Baldassare expressed confidence in Paduch’s eventual exoneration, stating, “Doctor Paduch continues to assert his innocence, and we believe there will come a time when justice is served.”
