Two Florida parents detained following altercation with school resource officer

DELTONA, Fla. — Authorities have brought criminal charges against two parents in central Florida following an incident involving a middle school resource officer, during which the mother assaulted the officer and the father subsequently struck her in the face. The incidents took place in Deltona and were reported on Wednesday.

The parents were charged on Tuesday with several offenses, including battery on a law enforcement officer and armed robbery, after the father forcibly took the officer’s taser when she was knocked down. The details leading up to the violent confrontation were captured in an arrest report.

The altercation began during a meeting at the deputy’s office when she informed the parents that a student would not be charged for throwing a shoe at the couple’s 11-year-old son. The father reportedly became agitated and yelled insults at the deputy. When she asked them to leave the office, the situation escalated.

As they exited, the mother positioned herself between the deputy and her husband and then pushed the officer. Following this, the father struck the deputy in the face and seized her taser, with bodycam footage from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office capturing the chaos.

After regaining her footing, the deputy drew her weapon and commanded the father to release the taser. She eventually managed to apprehend him, placing him in handcuffs. Medics later attended to the deputy due to symptoms that suggested a possible concussion, and she was transported to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood expressed his deep concern over the incident, stating, “To say, ‘I’m furious,’ is beyond. There’s no reason I have a deputy with a concussion for something so trivial.”

Current online court records do not indicate that the parents have legal representation.
