SAN DIEGO — Renowned Spanish soccer player and World Cup champion Juan Mata has officially joined the ownership group of the newly established San Diego FC. This notable move makes him the first active international soccer player to have an ownership interest in Major League Soccer (MLS).

With this development, Mata becomes just the second international player involved in MLS ownership, following in the footsteps of the legendary David Beckham.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Mata stated, “Becoming a partner with San Diego FC presents an exhilarating opportunity to create something remarkable in a city and league that are witnessing tremendous growth.” He further emphasized his alignment with the club’s commitment to the community and the Right to Dream Academy, saying it resonates with his personal values. “I am eager to lend my experience and passion for the sport to help build a club that motivates and inspires on and off the field,” he added.

Prior to this new venture, Mata had been playing for the Western Sydney Wanderers in the Australian A-League since September.

Mata’s presence in the world of soccer has been influential over many years. His career boasts numerous accolades across clubs in England, Spain, Turkey, and Japan. He was instrumental in the Spanish national team’s triumphant era, contributing to their victory in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 UEFA European Championship.

Starting his journey in the game at Real Madrid’s youth academy, Mata moved to Real Madrid Castilla, and in 2007, he transferred to Valencia CF, where he achieved success by winning the Copa del Rey in his first year. His move to Chelsea FC in 2011 marked a significant point in his career, as he played a crucial role in helping the London side secure the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, and UEFA Europa League titles, earning Chelsea’s Player of the Year award twice during his tenure.

In 2014, Mata signed with Manchester United, where he tasted further success, clinching the FA Cup, Europa League, and EFL Cup over nine seasons. His next chapter took him to Turkey’s Galatasaray in 2022, where he celebrated his first league title, followed by a stint at Japan’s Vissel Kobe in 2023, where he again lifted a league trophy.

In addition to his sporting achievements, Mata is also known for his philanthropic efforts. He founded the Common Goal initiative, through which he commits 1% of his salary to support various social causes, further demonstrating his dedication to making a positive impact beyond the soccer field.
