HERNANDO, Miss. — A man taken into custody during a lengthy standoff at a restaurant in Chicago has been authorized for extradition back to Mississippi, where he originally escaped from jail.
Joshua Zimmerman, who was arrested on August 21, is confirmed to be on his way back to Mississippi, as stated by a spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety. While details on his transfer date remain unclear, the spokesperson did not provide any information regarding Zimmerman’s legal representation.
In light of the ongoing investigation, no additional comments were made about the matter.
Zimmerman’s arrest occurred at a seafood restaurant located a few blocks away from the United Center, the venue for the Democratic National Convention. The U.S. Marshals Service has indicated that there was no connection between Zimmerman’s activities and any threats to the convention attendees. Initial reports suggest he might have been employed at the restaurant at the time of his apprehension.
On June 14, Zimmerman managed to escape from the DeSoto County Courthouse in Hernando while dressed in civilian clothing and without being restrained. His court appearance was initially set for charges in Mississippi related to attempted murder and armed robbery. Additionally, he was facing extradition to Texas, where he is implicated in a murder case, according to the Marshals Service.
Court documents from Harris County, Texas, reveal that Zimmerman is accused of the fatal shooting of Keyanna Mercer at a Houston motel on September 2, 2023. Following multiple complaints about disturbances, motel staff discovered Mercer’s body with a gunshot wound when checking the room.
Moreover, prior to his latest legal troubles, Zimmerman was arrested in Connecticut in 2022 on a felony sexual assault charge. He pleaded not guilty to these charges and was released after posting a $200,000 bond. However, a subsequent warrant was issued for his re-arrest.
After Zimmerman’s arrest, the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department announced a series of new security measures. Notably, a former deputy jailer was terminated from their position and is now facing charges for allegedly assisting in the escape of a prisoner.
