FRISCO, Texas — FC Dallas has announced the appointment of Eric Quill as the new head coach for the Major League Soccer team. Quill’s most recent position was as head coach for New Mexico United in the USL Championship, where he showcased his coaching capabilities.
Quill steps into the role following Peter Luccin, who took over as the interim head coach after Nico Estevez was let go in June due to a disappointing start of 3-8-5. Estevez has since been named head coach of the club’s rival, Austin FC, in October.
During his time with New Mexico United, which he joined in 2023, Quill successfully guided the team to the Western Conference semifinals in the playoffs, in addition to advancing to the quarterfinals in the U.S. Open Cup this season.
In a statement, FC Dallas’ chairman and CEO Clark Hunt expressed confidence in Quill’s abilities, emphasizing his championship-level coaching experience and extensive knowledge of the game amassed over thirty years. Hunt remarked on Quill’s emphasis on player development, stating that this focus makes him particularly suitable to lead FC Dallas.
Before his tenure with New Mexico, Quill was head coach for North Texas SC, where he achieved significant success by leading the team to the USL League One championship in 2019. His performance earned him the coach of the year distinction. North Texas SC is FC Dallas’ reserve team and currently participates in MLS Next Pro. Among his former players are recognized U.S. national team talents like Ricardo Pepi and Tanner Tessmann.
As a player, Quill competed in Major League Soccer from 1997 to 2005, representing various teams that included the Tampa Bay Mutiny and Kansas City Wizards, now known as Sporting Kansas City.
