CLEVELAND — In a notable move, the Cleveland Guardians have traded right-handed pitcher Eli Morgan to the Chicago Cubs, acquiring minor league outfielder Alfonsin Rosario in return.

Last season, Morgan made a significant impact, recording a 3-0 record with a 1.93 ERA during 32 appearances for the Guardians, who not only clinched the AL Central title but also boasted the top bullpen in Major League Baseball for the year 2024.

As the season unfolded, Manager Stephen Vogt increasingly relied on Morgan in high-pressure situations, following a period where he struggled with shoulder and elbow injuries. A highlight for Morgan was a remarkable streak of 16 consecutive scoreless innings, which he accomplished from late August through late September.

In addition to his regular season achievements, Morgan also contributed during the postseason, participating in six games—three against the Detroit Tigers and three against the New York Yankees. During this stretch, he allowed just two hits over four innings while striking out six batters.

The 28-year-old pitcher, whom Cleveland selected in the eighth round of the 2017 MLB Draft, finished his tenure with the Guardians with an overall record of 18 wins and 12 losses, accompanied by a 3.97 ERA in 131 appearances.

Meanwhile, Alfonsin Rosario, the player going the other way, is a 20-year-old outfielder who played for Single-A Myrtle Beach last season. He posted a batting average of .230, hitting 18 doubles, 16 home runs, and driving in 73 runs over the course of 109 games. Additionally, Rosario showcased his speed with 20 stolen bases and 61 runs scored.

The Cubs had picked Rosario in the sixth round of the 2023 MLB Draft, indicating that they have high hopes for his development as he transitions within the league.
