A former student from the University of Virginia has admitted guilt in connection with the tragic shooting that took place on campus, which resulted in the deaths of three football players and injuries to two additional students. Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., aged 25, accepted responsibility on Wednesday for three counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated malicious wounding, as well as five counts related to the use of a firearm during a felony. A hearing to determine his sentence is set to commence on February 4 in the Albemarle County Circuit Court.
According to officials, Jones opened fire on a charter bus filled with students who had just returned to campus after attending a play and sharing a meal in Washington, D.C. The motive behind this tragic incident remains undisclosed. At the time of the shooting, Jones was no longer a member of the university’s football team. Witness accounts suggest that he had specifically targeted certain individuals during the attack.
The victims included football players Lavel Davis Jr., D’Sean Perry, and Devin Chandler, all of whom lost their lives that night. Additionally, Mike Hollins, another team member, and Marlee Morgan, a fellow student, sustained injuries in the event. The shooting took place close to a parking garage and led to widespread panic across the campus, prompting a lockdown lasting 12 hours until Jones was apprehended. Initially, his trial was slated for January to address the murder charges and related offenses.
